Skansen,Sweden

A must-see destination in the surroundings of Stockholm is
the open-air museum of Skansen. It was a revolutionary act to
create the first out-door museum. The idea then had been
to preserve Swedish customs against the onslaught of
industrialisation in the late 19th century.

Skansen was founded in 1891 by philologist and ethnographer
Artur Hazelius, who is buried here. Drawing from all parts
of Sweden, he preserved examples of traditional
Swedish architecture, including farmhouses, windmills,
barns, a working glassblower's hut, and churches.
What the founder could not have known was the service
he was providing for tourists of the future, who want to see
Sweden’s beautiful architecture and native animals in one place.

In most of those historical buildings, the staff are dressed
in Swedish period clothing and play their role as bakers,
cooks, dairymen. Otherwise, they demonstrate their skills
as tanners, shoemakers, glass-blowers, ceramists...

All workers are extremely friendly and kind responding
in good English to curious tourists .
Very kind to pose for a photo too!

Artists performing at the out-door scene.
We were fortunately lucky with the weather which, despite
its frequent changes and some threatening rain clouds,
did us the favour of staying dry!

Swedish home made food was available and my hunger was
satisfied with exquisite salmon and potato salad.
And I couldn't resist to those delicious cakes... Yummy!!!

The park also has a zoo, carnival area, aquarium, theatre,
and cafés, all attractions in the old, traditional style
and child-friendly.

In Skansen, you can see everything has to do with daily life
activities:  gardening, home maintenance, tank repair,
berry picking...

Skansen is the place where traditions come alive.

It expands five centuries of Sweden history
and makes you travel out of time.

How great it is to travel...

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with
your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and
there you will long to return...

Blogland seems very quiet now,
I'm quite fond of my little corner of the internet
but a little tired too...
See you!
 bye!!!

  5. What a wonderful trip with beautiful pictures!
I had to look a while to see that's a real huge squirrel. The house on the left in the 11th photo is gorgeous. The color and style is charming in a country chic way.
Thank you for sharing you adventure.

  7. A wonderful place I had never before heard of before.Thank you for sharing. Sounds like you're having a wonderful time in Sweden. So good and lovely of you to still share here while I also noticed blogland isn't as 'busy' anymore as it used to be. But I keep loving it as well ;) There is the time issue sometimes though so I noticed that now I tend to make larger but lesser posts where I used to make more and shorter ones before.

  8. Olympia,
Skansen, Sweden is lovely. I really enjoyed hearing about all the Swedish customs and seeing the staff dressed in Swedish period clothing. The desserts look yummy, and those rolls are amazing. When Jess traveled through Europe, she went to Sweden, and she said everything was so green and groomed. It was very beautiful. I would love to go there someday.

I hope the June days are being good to you, Olympia.

    love,
    ~Sheri

I was wondering where you had disappeared to! Your photos of Skansen and all of its cultures and traditions are charming and colourful! My Swedish friend, Christina has introduced me to many of their traditions re: food and celebrations, and I know that Midsummer is a big one for them. Thanks for sharing the beauty of summertime in Sweden!

  20. Hello dearest Olympia!
Oh how i love those Scandinavian open-air museums! I've never been to Skansen, but my family and I have been to two similar places in Denmark: an old village - http://www.sonneundstrand.de/urlaub-daenemark/freilichtmuseum/den-gamle-by.htm - and a Viking-Museum - http://www.sonneundstrand.de/urlaub-daenemark/freilichtmuseum/vikingecenter-fyrkat.htm - with nice persons in historical dresses. We really loved it - and when we manage it to travel to Sweden, we will visit Skansen, too!
    Warm hugs, Traude

  27. Lieve Olympia,

  36. That last photo of all the colorful buildings is wonderful.

The museum reminds me of one we visited in Oslo, Norway. It was fun to see the dress, look in the homes and watch the girls cook. My grandmother was born in Norway so we felt like we were seeing her daily life as a child.

  39. Hello Olympia, looks like you had a wonderful holiday. If I ever get to Sweden, i would definitely like to go to Skansen, it looks very interesting. We have a similar thing in Ireland called The Ulster Folk Museum, where they have transported old buildings from different parts of Ireland to make a community, and the staff dress up and tell you the history of each house as you go in. It is a much easier way of learning about other cultures and times I think.
Thank you for your lovely comments, you are very sweet. Have a wonderful weekend, and take it easy. With much love, Linda x

  43. Wow how beautiful is this city. Been to Malmö and Helsingborg but we didn't really travel all the way to Stockholm. My daughter is living there for 12 months and she is loving it. I think midsummer is one thing that I would like to experience as well as the Northern lights. What a fun trip that was. Welcome back to blog land.
